5 – Image Noise & Spatial Domain Filtering

Now we’ve arrived at a very common and practical use for image processing – noise removal. Oftentimes in scientific research and even seemingly simple projects, we are presented with imperfect data or images that contain a variety of artifacts due to imperfections in the equipment in use, or outside disturbances from the surrounding environment. The point of this section is to introduce some common forms of noise in images and how to reduce the impact of these undesirable effects.
